In Preferences... go to the Profiles tab and under that, the Keyboard tab. At the bottom, check Use Option as Meta key.
(BTW, for systems where I use the Terminal a lot, I like using the Pro (black) background with the transparency set to about 80%, and a window of about 132 (columns) x 50)
The reduced opacity lets you see things going on behind the window, which is sometimes useful.
